Quick Answer

In Germany, most nurses train through a 3-year paid nursing Ausbildung (Pflegefachfrau/Pflegefachmann), taught in German. Some universities also offer nursing bachelor's degrees, mostly in German. If you already hold a BSc Nursing or GNM from India, you can apply for recognition (Anerkennung) and work as a nurse after meeting the language and any adaptation requirements.

Route 1: Nursing Ausbildung After 12th

The nursing Ausbildung in Germany combines classroom learning with practical training in hospitals and care homes. Trainees usually receive a monthly training allowance, and there is typically no tuition fee.

It is taught in German, so employers and schools commonly expect around B1–B2 German. Your Class 12 certificate usually needs to be recognised as equivalent to the required school level.

Route 2: BSc Nursing (Pflege) Degree in Germany

Germany also has university-level nursing programmes (Pflege / Pflegewissenschaft). Many lead to a professional nursing licence as well as a degree. Most are German-taught; English-taught nursing degrees are rare.

For BSc nursing in Germany after 12th, you normally need the same bachelor's entry route as other subjects (for example Studienkolleg) plus strong German. See bachelor's routes after 12th.

Route 3: Already a BSc Nursing or GNM Nurse? Get Recognition

Qualified nurses from India (BSc Nursing, GNM, nursing officers) can apply for recognition of their nursing qualification (Anerkennung) with the responsible authority of the German state where they want to work.

  • The authority compares your training with German nursing training.
  • If there are gaps, you may need an adaptation period or a knowledge test.
  • Until recognition is complete, you may be able to work as a nursing assistant.

Official guidance is on the "Anerkennung in Deutschland" portal; rules and timelines vary by state.

German Language and Next Steps

German is the key for every nursing route. Most employers and authorities ask for at least B1, and often B2, German for nursing work. Start learning early, as reaching B2 can take many months.
